What is the difference between a prophylaxis cleaning and a deep cleaning?A prophylaxis cleaning and a deep cleaning are both essential dental procedures, but they differ in scope and purpose. Prophylaxis cleaning, commonly known as a regular dental cleaning, is a preventive measure performed by a dental hygienist. It involves the removal of plaque, tartar, and surface stains from the teeth and gumline. Prophylaxis is typically recommended every six months to maintain good oral health and prevent the progression of gum disease. It is suitable for individuals with healthy gums and minimal plaque buildup. On the other hand, a deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, is a therapeutic procedure aimed at treating gum disease (periodontitis). This comprehensive cleaning is performed by a dentist or periodontist and involves cleaning below the gumline to remove accumulated plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the roots of the teeth. Additionally, the rough surfaces of the roots are smoothed (root planing) to promote gum reattachment and healing. Deep cleaning is necessary when there is significant gum inflammation, pockets between the gums and teeth, and signs of gum disease.
